Longmont city government observes Memorial Day on Monday, May 28, as a holiday. The following facilities will be CLOSED: Civic Center, Service Center, Library, Senior Center, Museum, Youth Center, Development Services Center, Waste Diversion Center, St. Vrain Memorial Building and Centennial Pool. Sunset Pool Opens Saturday

Sunset Pool at 1900 Longs Peak Avenue opens for the 2012 summer season on Saturday, May 26, with daily hours of 10 am to 5 pm through Sunday, June 3. Sunset is a heated outdoor pool featuring 6 lap lanes, a large wading area, 3 diving boards, and two fast waterslides. Its newly rebuilt bathhouse includes family-friendly features and a new party room. Daily and pass admissions are available. Volunteer Range Safety Officers Sought

The Longmont Police Department recently opened an indoor shooting range that will be used by both police staff and civilians. Volunteer Range Safety Officers are needed to supervise shooting activities on Friday nights from 5:30 to 9:30 pm and in 5-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Volunteers must have valid and current Range Safety Officer training certification. National Police Week Ceremony

National Police Week, established in 1962 by President Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress, pays special tribute to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Ceremonies are held in Washington, D.C., and in communities across the country. Cell Phones Are Not Toys

Cell phones are not toys; please take out the battery! Longmont police, fire and 911 emergency communication center are enlisting the community’s help to remove batteries from old cell phones before giving them to children as toys. A cell phone without a service carrier, even one that has been deactivated, can still dial 911. This results in a lot of calls to the dispatch center that keep personnel from attending to actual emergency calls. When you turn in your old, deactivated cell phone between 10 am and noon on Saturday, May 12, at the Walmart Super Center, 2514 Main Street, Walmart will donate a new Disney toy phone from Longmont’s 911 dispatchers.
