What will your kids do?

• Kids will participate in various activities to introduce and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle, all while having fun. Each day, kids will convene with a “circle activity” that introduces the kids to each other and the theme or activity of the day. Depending on the activity, kids can expect to “actively participate” for 1 - 2 hours.

• All activities will include everyone, as this program focuses on moving and action rather than competition.

• Activities of Move It could include any or all of the following: bike rides, running, hiking, fitness testing, flexibility training, playing various sports, family and community bike and walk nights, and other community events sponsored by the City of Longmont and Move It. Participants with their families can also participate in a community garden, for which kids and families will plant, maintain and harvest a garden, reaping the benefits by sharing in potlucks and recipes as the garden blossoms! Program participants will also be able to earn points toward incentives by volunteering at events around Longmont.

• The focus is to have the kids see the FUN in building health and fitness into their everyday lifestyles. Each day, Move It will provide healthy snack options, and will incorporate food and nutrition into the daily programs.

• Some travel may be necessary for some of the programs, and will be provided by the Move It staff. Trips may be taken to such places as the Recreation Center, Sunset pool, the Memorial Building and any of the outdoor parks in Longmont. Activities that require any travel out of Longmont will be accompanied by permission slips prior to the trip.

What to bring/wear:
Be prepared for daily activity. Closed toed shoes, comfortable “movement” clothes, a hat, sunscreen and jacket depending on weather. Water bottle each day. Bikes on “bike day” and swim gear on “swim days.” Please note that all activities are subject to change depending on weather conditions. “Swim days” will be posted at least 24 hours in advance so that kids can be prepared accordingly.

Service-Learning Project:
Move It! Participants will all help to decide how to take on a challenge within the community that could provide incentive and encouragement for all to appreciate and enjoy a healthier and more active lifestyle. The kids will identify some of the challenges that face their community and offer suggestions as to how to improve them. The kids will then determine how to best implement the changes/project and will work on it. The project is to be completed with each participant having a say in what the overall project should be. The project could be as simple as planting some trees and installing a park bench along a path in a neighborhood, which might encourage more walking and outside physical activity because now people have a place to take a break.

Testimonials from summer participants of Move it!

One of the mountain bike leaders shared the following story from his interactions with a Bike it! mountain bike trip earlier this summer:

“As we looped around the Boulder Res. I chatted with Camila. She told me she'd never been mountain biking before, was having fun, and that mountain biking "makes me feel like a different person." She explained that trying new experiences and achieving new goals made her feel different inside.”

A parent had this to say about her daughter’s involvement with Bike it! this summer:

“My daughter used to drag her heels whenever we mentioned going on bike rides. Her confidence in biking, knowledge of the rules of the road, and her overall excitement in achieving goals she never thought possible before going to Bike it! has truly been a joy to see. We even went on a family bike ride where she led the eight mile round trip! Thank you!”

Longmont Recreation Services Awarded $26,940 Grant

from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board Funds dedicated to educating and motivating middle school youth to increase their physical activity

Longmont, CO…The 2010 State Farm Youth Advisory Board has awarded a grant of $26,940 to Longmont Recreation Services’ middle school “Move It!” program to promote physical activity among middle school youth, their families, and the community. From over 1,110 proposals submitted to the Youth Advisory Board, the Recreation Services “Move It!” project proposal was one of 82 proposals nationwide selected by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board to receive a grant.

This State Farm Youth Advisory Board award signifies State Farm’s long belief that for communities to thrive, young people must be empowered as leaders and decision-makers to address real issues and problems.

“Longmont Recreation Services very much appreciates the generous grant provided by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board,” said Jeff Friesner, Recreation Manager of the City of Longmont, Recreation Services. “The funds will enable youth who participate in The Place after school programs at Longs Peak and Heritage Middle Schools, along with middle school youth in the community, to learn more about the benefits of physical activity and its importance in everyday life.”

The grant award will allow for the development of youth ambassadors who will explore how to overcome obstacles to physical activity while increasing their own fitness, learning life-skills such as goal setting and evaluation, and learning basic bicycle maintenance. “It is important to give youth the skills they need to continue being active beyond the period of the grant,” says Jeff Friesner. The ambassadors will take lessons learned and share them with their families, peers, and community by completing two neighborhood community service projects and advocating for involvement in the Walking Challenge and the Longmont Turkey Trot.

Longmont Recreation Services operates The Place after school program at Longs Peak Middle School. Enrollment at The Place is free for students. Enrollment is exclusive to Longs Peak Middle School students. The “Move It!” program will be free and open to all area middle school students, including incoming 6th graders, during the summer months. Informational meetings will be held the evenings of May 17 and June 10. Call 303-651-8406 or visit online at www.ci.longmont.co.us/rec for more information.

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is charged with helping State Farm design and implement a $5 million-a-year signature service-learning initiative to address issues important to State Farm and communities across the United States and Canada.
