Longmont Recreation Services teaches individuals 15 and older to become American Red Cross Lifeguards and, for those 16 years and older, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Longmont Recreation Services hires American Red Cross Lifeguards to guard each pool and beach facility and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors to teach swim lessons.

If you have current certifications, please click here to apply to work with us.
Pre-Requisites: must be 15 yrs old before the last class. Ability to complete 550 yard continuous swim of 200yds Front Crawl, 200 yards Breaststroke, and 150 yards Front Crawl/Breaststroke.
Learn the basics of lifeguard skills and practices. First Aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer are included. Register at least 1 week before the first class date to ensure book availability. If you are unsure if you can pass the pre-requisite, drop-in to the beginning masters swim group on Tuesday/Thursday evenings from 7:30-8:30pm at Centennial Pool!
Must be able to attend all classes.

Water Safety Instructor Classes
Pre-requisite: 16 years on or before the last day of class AND swim level 4 proficiency of Front & Back Crawl,
breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and Butterfly. FIT certification is included with this class. Class is intensive, please bring a sack lunch and swim suit every day. Water skills test and FIT class is on the first day. Successful completion certifies you to teach ARC swim lessons and programs. You must bring proof of age to the first class.
Class Dates: All classes must be attended to receive certification.
Bring your suit and demonstrate swimming ability to meet pre-requisite then stay for your FIT class.
* Pending Employee Requirements: Must submit a completed City of Longmont job application when registering
Swim Instructor Aide Classes
Prerequisite: 11 years old and completion of Level 4 swim lessons. Do you enjoy swimming and like children? Want to be a Water Safety Instructor, but not 16 yet? Learn how to assist instructors with swim lessons. After successful completion of this class, year-round volunteer opportunities exist with City of Longmont swimming lessons!
