Sandstone Ranch

The Visitor Center includes hands-on displays on environmental features of the area, as well as history of the Coffin family who homesteaded the site, and other early Longmont history. There is no admission fee to the Visitor Center. A nature trail from the Visitor Center takes you past several historical buildings, near the sandstone bluffs, and includes a scenic overlook. Numerous species of wildlife and birds are seen frequently on the property including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, bald eagles and red-tailed hawks. Walking or Biking Directions: Hop onto the St. Vrain Greenway and follow it east. The trail will lead you straight to the Visitors Center. Free Fridays: 10am to 12pm, June 7, June 14, June 21, June 28 & July 12 & 26.

Enjoy story time, puppets and/or puppet shows, crafts and nature with your children while enjoying the beauty of the Sandstone Visitor Center and grounds. 3001 Highway 119. Turn off 119 onto Sandstone Road and park at the top parking lot. Walk down to the visitor center for the fun.

Geology Walk at Sandstone Ranch

Saturday, June 8, 2013; 10:00am to noon
Sandstone Ranch Open Space; the Visitor Center is located south of Highway 119, one mile east of Weld County Road 1. Take the east entrance to the Sandstone Ranch area, turning south on Sandstone Drive. Follow the directional signs to the Visitor Center parking lot.
Join Boulder County volunteer naturalists Dick Pratt and Roger Myers to explore and learn about the geology of Sandstone Ranch and Boulder County. From a scenic overlook, we will observe and learn about this dramatic and diverse landscape, from the Great Plains to the Continental Divide. After a short and easy walk exploring geologic history, you can visit the beautiful and historic Sandstone Ranch house to learn about some of the human history associated with this site. Homesteaded in 1860, the   ranch house was built in the early 1880's, using sandstone quarried from the cliff next to the house. All ages are welcome.

1st Annual Pulling for Colorado Weed Pull @ Button Rock Preserve

Saturday, July 20, 2013; 9am to noon

Come and join the City of Longmont Natural Resources Division at beautiful Button Rock Preserve for a day of noxious weed education and pulling. This first annual event is part of a statewide campaign called Pulling for Colorado. The day will begin at 9 am with noxious weed identification training. Afterwards, we will join with our community to pull noxious weeds in the foothills that are threatening Button Rock Preserve and conclude at noon. There will be food, refreshments, and giveaways. Please bring leather gloves and a shovel and dress for working in tall, scratchy vegetation. Please RSVP to Natalie Wehrwein by July 15, 2013, by email or by phone at 303-774-4867.

May 25, 2013 - Saturday 10:00 am – 12 noon

June 22, 2013 – Saturday 10:00 am – 12 noon

Pastel workshop given by Diane Wood thru Outreach Program of Longmont Studio Tour.

This workshop is given free to the public. All materials provided. If you have pastels and paper, you may bring these to the workshop. We will paint scenery surrounding Sandstone Ranch or if you prefer, bring your own photo and paint from that. Ages teens to adults. To sign up, please either call Diane 303-678-7456 or email.

Collage Landscapes: In this workshop we will create collage landscapes using paper and fabric scraps. Basic color theory and perspective will be covered. This workshop is free and open to the public. Nanci Imburgia

Beginning Needlefelting: Nanci Imburgia will demonstrate both hand and machine needle felting techniques; students will then create a small hand needlefelted medallion, which you may turn into a pin.
