Pharmaceutical Drop Off Event at Longmont United Hospital, April 26
April 17, 2014 - On Saturday, April 26, the City of Longmont will partner with Longmont United Hospital (1950 Mountain View Avenue) to offer free disposal of your unwanted or expired medications. The drop-off event will be held from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
It’s estimated that 3-7% of all medication goes unused, according to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Pharmacy groups previously recommended flushing medications down the drain. However, more recent research shows that wastewater treatment plants may not “treat” these chemicals and they will pass through the system, back into the river and our raw water resources.
All pharmaceuticals (prescription and over-the-counter) from Longmont residents will be accepted for proper disposal at the April 26 event. This includes pills, capsules, liquids, inhalers, and patches. Only pharmaceuticals will be accepted; no needles, thermometers, medical equipment, personal care products or household hazardous wastes will be accepted. Businesses cannot dispose of their wastes at this event.
A pharmacist will be onsite to answer any questions and review the wastes prior to disposal. Residents are encouraged to remove or scratch out personal information from any bottle. Please retain the label that identifies the medication so that staff can segregate any controlled substances.
