Oligarchy Ditch Flow to Increase
May 3, 2013 - Due to the current drought that all of Colorado, and the Saint Vrain Creek Basin in particular, is experiencing, Union Reservoir is only half full. Union Reservoir is presently in priority and will be allowed to begin filling. The Oligarchy Ditch is the filler ditch for Union Reservoir and diverts from the Saint Vrain Creek, west of Longmont. Throughout the month of May the flows in the ditch will fluctuate from day to day. The Longmont Public Works and Natural Resources Department would like to inform citizens that on and after Monday, May 6, the flows in the Oligarchy Ditch will be high and will range between 50 and 70 cubic feet per second.
Citizens are asked to be aware of conditions in the Oligarchy Ditch and be especially careful with children and pets around the ditch in the coming weeks. In addition, the pedestrian underpasses along the greenway could be impacted. City staff will be monitoring water levels and temporarily close the underpasses if needed for safety reasons.
Up to date Oligarchy Ditch diversion information is available online at: http://www.dwr.state.co.us/SurfaceWater/data/district.aspx?div=1&dist=5
