Longmont Begins Annual Ditch Burning
MARCH 2, 2011 - On Thursday morning, March 3, Longmont's Public Works & Natural Resources staff will begin working with representatives from the Fire Department to burn the weeds from irrigation ditches. The burning of weeds is the desired management tool for purposes of weed and vegetation control for efficient water delivery in the ditches.
The burning of the weeds will take place through the spring, depending on weather. The locations will range from Button Rock Reservoir to the various ditches around the city.
The parks staff has numerous years of experience as well as having attended the basic wildland fire training academy and is recertified on an annual basis. Those individuals make themselves available based upon their workload and their park priorities. In addition to this group, the parks staff relies heavily on the Fire Department’s, wildfire crew for their assistance, guidance and training. This relationship has proven to be very effective. The crews bring numerous years of agricultural burn experience. It is our intention to utilize this experience and knowledge to implement a safe, successful program.
