Woodpecker Damage to be Repaired
City officials receive public comments in accordance with Wildlife Management Plan
APRIL 28, 2010 - Woodpeckers have caused thousands of dollars in damage to the City's Recreation Center and now City officials have a plan in place to mitigate the pecking and repair the damage.
Following a week-long public comment period as mandated by the City's Wildlife Management Plan, the City has decided to take the following actions:
1. Install appropriate nest boxes around the facility as soon as possible.
2. Repair holes when nesting period has been completed.
3. Install appropriate hardened surface material to eliminate woodpecker problems in the future.
Damage to the recreation center, located at 310 Quail Road, caused by woodpeckers has been an issue since 2007. A variety of mitigation efforts has been tried including the installation of speakers blasting predatory bird sounds, plastic owls, mylar strips and plain old yelling all have been ineffective.
Recreation center staff estimate that more than $10,000 was spent last year to patch holes in the building. Currently, there are approximately 31 holes that will need repair this year.
