Longmont Mayor Baum to Shave Head for Hungry on Thanksgiving Day

Mayor Bryan BaumNOVEMBER 24, 2010 - When Longmont Mayor Bryan L. Baum challenged the community to raise $25,000 for the OUR Center food program, it seemed like a lofty goal. When he promised to shave his head if the Longmont community raised the money, the dollars started rolling in.

Mayor Baum will be shaved bald at the Old Chicago restaurant, 1805 Industrial Circle, at 1:30 pm during the annual OUR Center’s Thanksgiving Dinner for the Hungry on Thanksgiving Day. He will be joined by his 7-year-old son Chase, Longmont Council Member Gabe Santos and radio personality Tom Sheffield — who have all agreed to donate their hair for the hungry in solidarity with their fellow brave men.

This is the exciting culmination of the highly successful Hair4Hunger Campaign to raise money for the OUR Center food program.
Mayor Baum challenged the sponsors to raise another $15,000 after the original $10,000 was raised through the efforts of Longmont businessman Jim Lytton (who had his head shaved in August). The community, including Longmont Rotary, rose to the occasion bringing in another $15,000.

Another challenge came from City Council Member Gabe Santos, daring sponsors to raise another $15,000 for food for people in Longmont who are food insecure. In another inspired effort, Rocky Mountain Christian Church raised $20,000 for the OUR Center to buy food—so Council Member Santos will lose his hair, too!

A special shout out goes to the staff of local salons that raised money in the challenge including Barbara the Barber, BeauImage, Ciao Bello, and Coco Michelle.

This “hair razing” event occurs during the annual “Spirit of Thanksgiving” event — a partnership between the OUR Center and the Old Chicago Foundation to offer community members a free Thanksgiving meal.

The OUR Center wants to express their thanks to everyone involved in this campaign to assure that no one goes hungry in Longmont. Everyone involved was amazing in their dedication to the effort and the level of commitment was extraordinary. The donation of time and talent to the cause is astonishingly generous.
