Ruptured Gas Line Partially Closes Highway 287 in Longmont

JULY 7, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. - Highway 287 is completely closed between Pike and Plateau Roads after a welder sparked a small fire while repairing a ruptured gas line. The fire is out and no one was injured but it did cause the highway to be closed in all directions. It is expected to reopen to some traffic by 7 p.m. on Thursday night. When that happens, the road will be open with with one lane going southbound and two lanes going northbound. Repair work is expected to continue until at least midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

JULY 7, 2010 at 1 p.m. - Highway 287 in Longmont is down to one lane in each direction between Pike Road and Plateau Road in Longmont due to a ruptured gas line. Crews from Xcel Energy are on the scene attempting to shut off the gas. Excel also has air monitors in place testing the condition of the air. As long as weather conditions remain stable, it is expected that one lane in each direction will remain open until the gas is shut off which could take 2 to 6 hours (approximately between 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.). Motorists are urged to use alternative routes.
