Potato Planting Project Seeks Volunteers for Next Phase

June 25, 2009 - The Longmont potato garden project is seeking volunteers to tend the garden that was planted earlier this year. The work is scheduled at Rogers Grove on Saturday, June 27, 8 to 10 a.m.

This is the second year of the demonstration project.  Last year, more than 500 pounds of potatoes were donated to volunteers and the OUR Center to help feed the Longmont community.

The potatoes have already grown beyond the first hilling and are thriving in this cool wet season. This next workday will take care of the rest work the potatoes will need - except for some weeding - until harvest time. The mulch will help keep the weeds at bay.

Volunteers will be "hilling" - a process that creates more soil around the growing tubers which will ensure larger and more numerous potatoes. They also will typically be more consistently shaped. Sun scald in shallow soil is mildly toxic, so the process gives the growing potatoes help with an additional protective layer. The process also has the added benefit of disturbing the soil to uproot weeds that compete for moisture and nutrients.

Volunteers should meet at Rogers Grove, 220 Hover Road, just north of the parking lot at 8 a.m.  Remember to bring work gloves, shovels and hoes if you can.
