Second Potato Harvest Scheduled Due to Muddy Conditions

September 2, 2009 - Muddy conditions curtailed the scheduled volunteer potato harvest on August 29. A second attempt to harvest potatoes is scheduled for Saturday, September 12 at 8 am.

Many volunteers made a valiant attempt in wet conditions but it was just too difficult. An attempt will be made to dry out the beds for easier digging and better harvest conditions. Please mark your calendars to join us again. In spite of the tough conditions, we harvested 50 pounds of potatoes and took 40 pounds to the OUR center! We hope for much greater bounty this next time!

This growing season, the City of Longmont Natural Resources Division planted two potato crop varieties in its second year as a sustainable community food share project.  Carolina Gold potatoes will be harvested at this event.  A later event will harvest Russet Burbank potatoes.

Most potatoes will be donated to the OUR Center, but volunteers will also be welcome to take a share home with them. This is the second year of the demonstration project.  Last year, more than 500 pounds of potatoes were donated to volunteers and the OUR Center to help feed the Longmont community.

Participants are encouraged to bring a bag or box and garden fork (preferred), or shovel.
