State HWY 66 and Hover Intersection to be Completed in November
OCTOBER 20, 2009 - For the past several months the busy intersection at Colorado State Highway 66 and Hover Street has been a construction zone. The City's ¾ Cent Street Fund Sales and Use Tax was used for local funding participation and enabled the City to receive a $2 million grant from the State of Colorado for this much needed project.
Scheduled for completion in early November 2009, this project includes several improvements and additions:
- New westbound dual left-turn lanes on Highway 66 will facilitate the heavy traffic turning onto southbound Hover Street. Westbound Highway 66 to southbound Hover Street drivers will notice that they may only make their left turn when the green arrow is displayed above the lane, but with the additional turn lane, the traffic will flow more smoothly. Drivers should exercise caution when turning to make sure they stay in their lane which will be designated by a dotted white stripe.
- Improvements to the existing acceleration lane from northbound Hover Street to eastbound State Highway 66 will increase capacity and improve safety. The additional length of the acceleration lane should allow drivers to safely merge into the flow of traffic on eastbound Highway 66.
- The addition of bike lanes and raised crosswalks will better serve the needs and desires of the community for alternative modes of transportation. The raised crosswalks will be a reminder to drivers to be on the lookout for pedestrians. Drivers must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
- The reconstruction of the intersection and replacement of the existing surface with new concrete pavement will provide a durable road surface for many years.
