Public Invited to Observe Start of Citywide 2010 Budget Process
MARCH 13, 2009 - With an economy in recession and sales tax revenues in decline, the City of Longmont is beginning the process of making hard choices for the 2010 General Fund operating budget. The process begins with the City’s Boards and Commissions participating in facilitated workshops designed to review and validate assumptions and results created by Longmont staff members in the following areas:
• Economic Health
• Community Safety
• Environmental Health
• Cultural, Learning, Recreation and Human Service Opportunities
• Neighborhood Quality
• Effective and Efficient Governance
Board and Commission members will provide assistance in defining these results during a variety of meetings scheduled throughout March (see schedule below). The public is invited to observe these meetings and time will be allotted at the end for public comment.
Throughout the past few years, the Longmont City Council and staff have been faced with the challenge of providing quality municipal services to residents within an economic environment where available revenues to sustain those services are not keeping pace with the increasing costs to provide those services. Staff has worked hard to shave operating budgets as much as possible while limiting the impact on services that residents have come to expect from their local government. As 2010 approaches, the economic challenges will be even greater. We are faced with the possibility of a need to reduce and/or eliminate some of the General Fund programs and services that we have previously offered to the community.
