Boulder County Health requested that we provide the following information to the public:
A bat was found in the Longmont Public Library on June 24, 2009.
The bat has tested positive for rabies.
If you, your child, or a pet has had any physical contact with a bat (i.e. picking up, petting, or touching) near this location, please call Boulder County Public Health at 303-441-1564 during business hours or 303-441-1460 after-hours/weekend.
The best way to prevent exposure to rabies is to follow the following precautions:

Never handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. Contact animal control or your local public health agency to collect the animal for you.
-
Thoroughly wash any wound caused by an animal with soap and water, and seek medical attention immediately.
-
If you believe that a person or a pet has been bitten or exposed, please contact Boulder County Public Health to arrange for capture and submittal of the bat.
-
Prevent bats from entering living areas where they might contact people and pets.
-
Keep vaccinations current for all dogs, cats, and ferrets; keep your cats and ferrets inside and your dogs under direct supervision.
-
Call animal control to remove stray animals from your neighborhood.
