Public Invited to Welcoming Reception for City's New Attorney
April 8, 2009 -
The public is invited to a welcoming reception for Longmont’s new City Attorney Eugene Mei on Tuesday, April 14, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Longmont Civic Center located at 350 Kimbark St. Refreshments will be served at 5 p.m. and the Mayor will make opening remarks at 5:30 p.m.
With a goal of working in an environmental field, the Boston native obtained a B.A. in environmental science from the University of California, Berkeley. He then realized that he needed a background in the technical and policy aspects of environmental science to do the kind of work he was interested in. That led him to the University of Michigan for a joint master’s degree in natural resource policy and public health, as well a law degree.
After working in a large law firm, Mei accepted a position with the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office. There he concentrated on code enforcement, land use and development, planning and property tax appeals. That’s also where he found the type of practice that met all his goals. “I was attracted to the opportunity to create a sustainable lifestyle through public service for the same reasons I was interested in environmental work,” he said. “This was a place where I could provide a good product for the citizens while helping improve the community.”
The Longmont City Council, which hires the city manager, municipal judge and city attorney, launched a nationwide search for a new city attorney in December 2008. Mei was one of three finalists they interviewed. Following a three-year stint at the Westminster City Attorney’s Office, Mei began work March 30 as Longmont’s city attorney.
