LONGMONT CITY COUNCIL DECLARES DAY OF GIVING
City initiative to support American Red Cross relief efforts
September 8, 2005 – During the last several days, many generous Longmont businesses and residents have contacted the City with offers to help with relief efforts for the victims of the Hurricane Katrina. In response to the Longmont community’s desire to help, Longmont City Council has created a “Longmont Day of Giving” on Monday, September 12, 2005.
The primary focus will be to raise money for the American Red Cross. The Red Cross has certified the City of Longmont as an official collection agency. The City will establish collection points at all of the major City facilities.
Locations accepting cash, checks and credit cards:
- Civic Center – 350 Kimbark Street
- Senior Center – 910 Longs Peak Avenue
- Library – 409 4th Avenue
- Fire Station # 1 – 501 S. Pratt Parkway
- Fire Station # 2 – 2300 Mountain View Avenue
- Fire Station # 3 – 1000 Pace Street
- Fire Station # 4 – 501 23 rd Avenue
- Fire Station # 5 – 617 Barberry Drive
Locations accepting cash, checks:
- Recreation Center – 340 Quail Road
- Safety and Justice – 225 Kimbark Street
- Centennial Pool – 1201 Alpine Street
- Public Works Maintenance Facility – 375 Airport Road
- Ute Creek Golf Course – 2000 Ute Creek Drive
- Sunset Golf Course – 1900 Longs Peak Avenue
- Twin Peaks Golf Course – 1200 Cornell Drive
For Business Donations - Locations accepting cash, checks:
- Longmont Area Economic Council (LAEC) – 528 Main Street - Donna at 303-651-0128
Each facility will be staffed with Longmont City employees and volunteers from the community. Each location, open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. , will be capable of receiving cash, checks for the Red Cross. Some locations will provide Internet access for individuals wishing to donate by using a credit card.
Several locations will provide computer access to the Red Cross’ Internet site for individuals who prefer to use credit cards to make a monetary donation. The Red Cross will also provide authorization for Longmont staff to print receipts for customers wishing to report their donation on income tax forms.
The City’s donation locations will not be capable of accepting food or goods. The OUR Center is accepting non-perishable food and toiletries to replenish their stock in order to be prepared for the arrival of displaced evacuees. These items should be sent to the Longmont OUR Center located at 250 3rd Avenue. Clothing is not being accepted at this time.
The Longmont Times-Call has agreed to participate in this effort by printing advertisements in the daily newspaper about the “Day of Giving” and information will also be made available through the Longmont Cable Channel 3, Longmont ’s weekly e-newsletter and Web site (www.ci.longmont.co.us). It is also possible that several large Longmont businesses will provide a dollar-for-dollar match of the grand total collected on this day.
