LAVA Hires New Executive Director

After an extensive search and hiring process, the Longmont Area Visitors Association (LAVA) has hired Joe Ward as the new Executive Director. Recently, LAVA brought 3 finalist candidates to Longmont for a full day of panel interviews and a community forum. Ward has a strong background in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry. With 24 years of experience, Joe most recently served as the Executive Director for the Orange County, Virginia, Visitors Bureau. Ward is expected to start January 16. He plans to reside in Longmont along with his family. The Longmont Area Visitors Association (LAVA) is a tourism partner with the City of Longmont to support, market, develop and enhance historical, cultural, business meeting and recreational activities in Longmont. These activities draw regional, national and international tourism to Longmont and surrounding areas.  LAVA’s goal is to establish and develop Longmont as a desirable tourism destination and enrich the economic well being of the community.

City Offices Closed on December 26

Longmont city government observes the Christmas holiday on Monday, December 26. The following facilities will be CLOSED: Civic Center, Service Center, Development Services Center, Library, Senior Center, Museum, Youth Center, and Waste Diversion Center. Trash and recycling collection will be one day late during this week. If you have questions about the collection schedule, call 303-651-8416. Free Shredding Event on Saturday

The Longmont Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street will hold a free shredding event from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, December 17. This event is for residential documents only; no business materials will be accepted. Please bring a copy of your most recent Longmont utility bill to show that you pay the waste management fee. Apply Now for 2012 Student Exchange Program

Applications are available for Longmont Sister City Association’s 2012 Student Exchange Program. Four chaperones and 16 student ambassadors will be selected for the exchange with sister cities Chino, Japan, and Ciudad Guzman, Mexico. You can pick up applications in the City Manager’s Office at 350 Kimbark, or visit www.longmontsistercities.com. Chaperone applications are due in the City Manager’s Office by 5 pm on Friday, January 6, and ambassador applications are due by 5 pm on Friday, January 20. Applicants Sought for Cultural Events Grant

For the eighth year, the City will award Cultural Event Grants in 2012. Longmont organizations and individuals are eligible for a grant to support community celebrations of Longmont’s vibrant cultural heritage. An information session will be held on Wednesday, January 4, from noon to 1 pm in the City Council Study Session Room at the Longmont Civic Center, 350 Kimbark Street. Grant applications must be received by the office of Community and Neighborhood Resources no later than Friday, January 13, 2012.
