Katagami is a paper stencil used in printing certain Japanese kimono fabric. Colorado artist Jennifer Falck Linssen hand carves these intricate and abstract stencils, then shapes them into stunning paper sculptures. The organic forms of her art evoke both East and West.

Linssen’s paper sculptures evolved from her work with Japanese katagami stencils, used in making katazome prints for kimonos and other fine textiles. In this lecture, she explores the history of the stencil form, and how she has turned an artmaking tool into fine art.
