Longmont Power & Communications Sets New Record for Electric System Peak Loads


With this week’s hot weather, Longmont Power & Communications (LPC), the City of Longmont’s municipal electric provider, saw a record system peak demand for electricity of 182 MW. The peak demand is the highest amount of electricity required to meet customer needs during a 15 minute period. This demand exceeds LPC’s previous record peak of 178 MW which was set in 2008.

“As temperatures in Longmont skyrocket, the demand for electricity by businesses and residents increases as well. Our system is in good shape, we have plenty of capacity and are prepared to meet our customer’s needs,” said Tom Roiniotis, Director, Longmont Power & Communications. “This is a result of good long term planning by both the City of Longmont and our wholesale power provider, Platte River Power Authority.”

LPC and Platte River continue to make improvements that allow the distribution and transmission systems to reliably carry loads such as it has seen during the recent record high temperatures. In particular, the significant transmission line upgrades recently completed by Platte River Power Authority increased transmission capacity and added redundancy to the system, enabling it to carry larger loads more reliably.

While outages during extreme high use times are not entirely avoidable, the system maintains plenty of capacity and outage incidents have been minimized. Customers who do experience an outage should call 303-651-8386 so that LPC can dispatch crews and make repairs as quickly as possible.
