The November 2009 Election
offers the following three ballot items regarding Longmont's services.
Click on the links to view specific information about each item, including points for and against:
2A: Extension of the existing 3/4 cent Street Fund Sales and Use Tax: Continued improvement and maintenance of over 300 miles of Longmont streets and over 600 miles of sidewalks, city bridges, underpasses and traffic signals with the extension of the existing 3/4 cent Street Fund Sales and Use Tax. This funding source is not a new tax or a tax increase. It is a five year extension of a tax that originated in 1986 and was extended in elections in 1990, 1994, 2000 and 2005. |
2B: Wastewater Treatment Plant Bond Issue: Issuance of debt financing bonds to improve the Longmont Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant currently meets and exceeds state and federal standards but the rehabilitation or replacement of aging facilities is necessary to the continued operation of the plant and the protection of the quality of the St. Vrain Creek below the wastewater treatment plant. |
2C: Telecommunications Ballot Question: The right to provide advanced telecommunications services to the entire Longmont community utilizing the existing fiber optic backbone network. Senate Bill 152 limits municipalities from providing certain telecommunications services. However, the Bill allows voters to determine whether or not a local government can provide advanced telecommunications services. If approved by voters, the City could potentially provide fiber bandwidth leases and advanced data, voice and video services such as Internet access and wireless technologies directly to individuals and businesses. This ballot question does not seek funding from Longmont residents. |
