News & Updates, Left Hand Creek Flood Control Project, March 7, 2012
South Pratt Parkway is scheduled to open to traffic on Saturday March 10, weather permitting. One lane of traffic in each direction will be opened across Lefthand Creek to Missouri Avenue. The existing vehicular detour route will remain marked for motorists choosing to bypass the area of ongoing construction. Southbound traffic on South Pratt Parkway can continue to follow Jersey Avenue east to Main Street. Northbound traffic can use the traffic signal at Missouri Avenue and Main Street.
The intersection at South Pratt Parkway and Missouri Avenue will also be open to pedestrian traffic; however cyclists and pedestrians are still encouraged to use the existing Kanemoto Park pedestrian bridge located west of the intersection to cross the creek safely until construction in of South Pratt Parkway is completed. Appropriate signage and traffic control devices will mark the recommended routes.
To date, significant progress has been made on the channel of Left Hand Creek. Once completed, Phase 1 of the Flood Control Project will result in the replacement of the box culvert at South Pratt Parkway and improvements to the adjacent roadways and bicycle path in the Southmoor Park neighborhood. New grading, utilities, landscaping and installation of boulder walls are shaping the future of the reduced floodplain area.
Phase 2 construction work will begin later this month on Main Street. This work will include adding two new box culverts under Main Street immediately south of the existing single box culvert – one for additional drainage and one for a pedestrian underpass. During construction, traffic on Main Street (Highway 287) will be limited to one lane in each direction. Traffic delays will be minimized to the greatest extent possible during this time, but delays should be expected. It is expected that construction along Main Street will be completed in approximately 4 months.
