June 2013 Project Completion Update, Left Hand Creek Flood Control Project

The City has been working on changes to the FEMA regulated floodplain for Left Hand Creek between Pike Road and Highway 287. Our construction project is essentially completed and we have been collecting data and updated maps to submit to FEMA for their review.

We will be hosting a public meeting to discuss the draft results of the project at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1303 S. Bross Lane on Thursday, June 20 from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. There will be a short presentation of the maps at 6:15 pm, with the balance of the meeting being an informal open house format.

There are three maps available for viewing, click on the thumbnail to view map:

1. Existing FEMA Regulated Floodplain – This map shows the limits of the floodplain as adopted by FEMA before construction of the recent project.

2. Actual Floodplain – In 2010, the City determined that the limits of the FEMA regulated floodplain were not accurate by using updated mapping and surveying and a more accurate computer model. This data showed that more structures were located in the floodplain than what are shown on the FEMA maps. This map shows which structures in this area were actually located within the 100-year floodplain.

3. DRAFT Post-Construction Floodplain – This map reflects which structures would be located within the 100-year floodplain if FEMA accepts the data that will be submitted by the City for their review and approval.

Please note that FEMA could require revisions to this map during their review and that the changes to the map are not final until the new map is adopted by FEMA (hopefully by January 2014, depending on FEMA’s schedule). Once FEMA has adopted changes to the regulatory floodplain, the City will contact affected property owners by mail.

We look forward to seeing you at the public meeting. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the City’s project managers for this project.
