SAFETY CHECKLIST

Simple Changes That Could Save Your Life
Your Fire Department Cares About Your Safety
The Longmont Fire Department cares about your safety. Two programs can help
you and your family. Free smoke detectors are given to parents of newborns,
senior citizens, and people who cannot afford them. A free home safety survey
is available to every resident. Firefighters will help you check your home
for fire and safety hazards. For more information please call (303) 651-8437.
Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries
The Longmont Fire Department recommends changing smoke detector batteries
twice a year. An easy way to remember is, "Change Your Clock, Change
Your Battery" during the spring and fall time change weekends.
Check Your Smoke Detectors
After putting in fresh batteries, make sure the detector works by pushing
the test button.
Count Your Smoke Detectors
Install at least one smoke detector on every level of your home, especially
outside all sleeping areas.
Vacuum Your Smoke Detectors
Clean your detectors of dust and cobwebs.
Change your Flashlight Batteries
Keep a working flashlight near your bed, in the kitchen, basement, and family
room.
Plan and Practice Your Escape
Make sure everyone in your family is familiar with the sound that your smoke
detector makes. Have at least two different escape routes and practice them
with the entire family. Once outside, everyone should go to the meeting place
your family has picked out (a mailbox, the old oak tree, etc.) Call for help
from a neighbors house. If you have any questions on how to make or
practice your home escape plan, please call (303) 651-8437.
