Longmont City Council

GOVERNANCE: The City of Longmont, is governed by a seven member Council. The Mayor is elected to serve a two year term and each Council member is elected to serve a four year term. The Mayor and Council members are the leaders and policy makers in the community elected to represent various segments of the community and to concentrate on policy issues that are responsive to residents' needs and wishes.

CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS: The City Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month in a regular session at 7:00 p.m. in the Civic Center Complex at 350 Kimbark. On the first and third Tuesday of every month, the City Council holds a study session at 7:00 p.m. in the same location. Study sessions, which generally cover only one or two topics, are designed to allow the Council to talk on a more in depth level about issues than can be done at regular sessions. No formal action may be taken by the Council at a study session other than to direct staff to proceed in a certain manner and to bring items back to a regular session for action.

COFFEE WITH COUNCIL: Meet with City Council members on the last day of every month to discuss any topic. Meetings are generally held at local coffee houses in the city. See Coffee with Council Calendar.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: During a previous goal setting retreat, City Council discussed possible ways in which the City of Longmont could incorporate more community involvement approaches in its service delivery that truly engages residents as partners in facing complex community issues so that they are more likely to take responsibility for sustaining solutions to those same issues. As a result of its retreat discussion, City Council directed staff to develop and implement a comprehensive approach for involving the Longmont community in City service delivery and problem-solving efforts. Staff committees, with community and Council input, created a community involvement approach for the City of Longmont. This approach formalizes the process for how the City determines when community involvement is important and how we can achieve community involvement that is meaningful and productive for our entire community.
