Ice Skating Classes involve:
- One ice skating class per week
- Rental skates included, if needed
- 3 or 5 visit punch pass for public skating (depending on number of classes offered each session)
- USFS membership included with registration. Benefits of USFS membership: a record book with stickers to keep track of the levels completed, a member patch, a year patch, information about skating, Sports Accident Insurance coverage, and the opportunity to participate in group lessons, exhibitions, ice shows and Basic Skills competitions when offered.
Ice skating registrations can be done in person or over-the-phone at any Longmont Recreation Facility. It can also be done on-line.

Ice Skating Lessons for Youth Ages 4-6 Years: Snow Plow Sam
Snow Plow Sam 1
Wednesday, 11:30am-12pm; Basic Code: 2038.10
Thursday, 6-6:30pm; Basic Code: 2038.11
Skaters learn to sit and stand up with skates on & off-ice,
march in place, march forward 8-10 steps, march then glide
on two feet, and dip in place.
Snow Plow Sam 2 -
Thursday, 6-6:30pm; Basic Code: 2039.1
Skaters must have passed or must demonstrate skills from
Snow Plow Sam 1. Skaters learn to march followed by a
long glide, dip while moving, backward wiggles 6 in a row,
forward two foot swizzles 2-3 in a row, rocking horse, one
forward & one backward swizzle, two foot hop in place.
Snow Plow Sam 3 -
Thursday, 6-6:30pm; Basic Code: 2040.1
Skaters must have passed or must demonstrate skills from
Snow Plow Sam 2. Skaters learn forward skating 8-10
steps, forward one foot glide on right and left foot, forward
swizzles 4-6 in a row, backward swizzles 4-6 in a row,
forward snowplow stop, and curves.
Ice Skating Lessons for Youth Ages 7 - 13 Years: Basic Skills
To advance to the next level, students must have passed, or must demonstrate skills from, the previous level.
Basic Skills 1 - Thursday, 6:30-7pm; Basic Code: 2041.1
Skaters learn to sit and stand up with skates on & off ice,
march forward across ice, forward two foot glide, dip,
forward swizzles 6-8 in a row, backward wiggles 6-8 in a
row, snowplow stop, and rocking horse 2-3 in a row, two
foot hop in place.
Basic Skills 2 -
Thursday, 6:30-7pm; Basic Code: 2042.1
Skaters learn forward one foot glides left and
right foot, backward two foot glide, backward swizzles 6-8
in a row, two foot turn from forward to backward in place,
moving snowplow stop, and forward alternating ½ swizzle
pumps in a straight line.
Basic Skills 3 -
Thursday, 6:30-7pm; Basic Code: 2043.1
Skaters learn forward stroking showing
correct use of blade, forward ½ swizzle pumps on a circle
6-8 consecutive clockwise and counter clockwise, moving
forward to backward two foot turn clockwise and counter
clockwise, backward one foot glides right and left, forward
slalom, and two foot spin up to two revolutions.
Basic Skills 4 -
Thursday, 7-7:30pm; Basic Code: 2044.1
Skaters learn forward outside edge on a
circle right and left, forward inside edge on a circle right and
left, forward crossovers clockwise and counter clockwise,
forward outside three turn from a stand still position right
and left, backward ½ swizzle pumps on a circle clockwise
and counter clockwise, backward stroking, and backward
snowplow stop right and left.
Basic Skills 5 -
Thursday, 7-7:30pm; Basic Code: 2045.1
Skaters learn backward outside edge on
a circle right and left, backward inside edge on a circle
right and left, backward crossovers clockwise and counter
clockwise, beginning one foot spin up to three revolutions
optional entry and free foot position, hockey stop, and side
toe hop both directions.
Basic Skills 6 -
Thursday, 7-7:30pm; Basic Code: 2046.1
Skaters learn forward inside three turn from
a standstill right and left, moving backward to forward two
foot turn on a circle clockwise and counter clockwise, t-stop
right and left, bunny hop, forward arabesque/spiral on a
straight line right or left, forward lunge right or left.
Basic Skills 7 -
Thursday, 7-7:30pm; Basic Code: 2047.1
Forward inside open Mohawk from a
standstill position right to left and left to right, backward
outside edge to forward outside edge transition on a circle
right and left, ballet jump right or left, backward crossovers
to a backward outside edge clockwise and counter
clockwise, forward inside pivots right to left.
Basic Skills 8 -
Thursday, 7-7:30pm; Basic Code: 2048.1
Skaters learn moving forward outside three
turn on a circle right and left; moving forward inside three
turn on a circle right and left; combination move: forward
crossovers into forward inside Mohawk, step down and
cross behind, step into backward crossover and stop to
forward inside edge, repeat three times, clockwise and
counter clockwise; one foot spin optional entry and free foot
position, waltz jump, mazurka right or left.
Ice Skating Lessons for Ages 14 Years through Adult
Adult 1 -
Thursday, 7-7:45pm; Basic Code: 2050.1
Skaters learn falling and recovery, forward strides and
glides, forward swizzles 4-6 in a row, backward skating,
backward swizzles 4-6 in a row, forward one foot glides one
time skaters height right and left, two foot turns in place,
snowplow stops right or left, forward curves on two feet,
and forward ½ swizzle pumps on a circle clockwise and
counter clockwise.
Adult 2 -
Thursday, 7-7:45pm; Basic Code: 2051.1
Skaters must have passed or must demonstrate skills from
Adult 1. Skaters learn forward stroking, backward ½ swizzle
pumps in a circle clockwise and counter clockwise, moving
two foot turns on a curve clockwise and counter clockwise,
forward edges on a circle outside and inside clockwise
and counter clockwise, forward crossovers clockwise and
counter clockwise, backward one foot glide right or left,
forward pivot on direction only, and forward chasses on a
circle both directions.
Adult 3 -
Thursday, 7-7:45pm; Basic Code: 2052.1
Skaters must have passed or must demonstrate skills
from Adult 2. Skaters learn backward edges on a circle
outside and inside clockwise and counter clockwise,
backward crossovers clockwise and counter clockwise,
inside Mohawk right to left or left to right, basic forward
outside and forward inside edges 4-6 consecutive, forward
progressives clockwise and counter clockwise, beginning
two foot spin, backward snowplow stop right or left.
Adult 4 -
Friday, 7-7:45pm; Basic Code: 2053.1
Skaters must have passed or must demonstrate skills
from Adult 3. Skaters learn forward three turns outside
and inside right and left; perimeter stroking with crossover
end patterns; forward outside to inside change of edge
sequence; alternate backward crossovers with two foot
transition; footwork sequence: 3-5 forward crossovers to
an inside Mohawk, 3-5 backward crossovers, step forward
inside the circle and repeat; power three turns one direction
only, backward chasses on a circle clockwise and counter
clockwise.
