Union Reservoir Master Plan Update
The City of Longmont Parks, Open Space and Public Facilities division has undertaken the Union Reservoir Master Plan project which entailed a great deal of public input. Below are summaries of the public meetings, draft versions of the master plan and other information that was considered during the planning and public input process.
Eagle Watch Update 3/13/08
Division of Wildlife staff, volunteers and City of Longmont Open Space Rangers have jointly conducted an Eagle Watch project for various sites around the Longmont area since December 2007. One of the sites observed has been Union Reservoir to determine the general habits of the local eagle population and specifically if several cottonwood trees on the southwestern shoreline and inlet area are “eagle roost trees.” It has been determined that these trees are not winter roosts.
Eagles are a migratory species and use the Longmont area and the St Vrain Corridor in several ways:
- Perching - Trees or areas where eagles frequent for hunting observation. (Trees and the winter ice at Union reservoir and along the St. Vrain are used for perching).
- Roosting – Groups of trees that provide diurnal and/or nocturnal perches for less than 15 eagles (Roosting exists along the St. Vrain corridor, but not at Union Reservoir).
- Winter Forage Sites – Areas frequented by eagles between mid-November and mid-March. (Union reservoir, on the ice and from nearby trees, and the St. Vrain corridor are winter forage sites).
- Nesting – A specific location where a pair of eagles have at least attempted to nest within the last five years (One nest exists along the St. Vrain Greenway, but no nests exist at Union Reservoir).

City Council Presentation
A presentation to City Council for review and direction, has held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007. Council directed staff to bring additional information regarding the reservoir expansion to them prior to formal action on the Master Plan. That presentation was held on April 15, 2008. The Union Reservoir Recreational Master Plan item will be scheduled for an upcoming Council meeting. Please check the current Council agenda to confirm dates and approximate time.
