On Thursday, September 2, at 6:30 pm, the Art in Public Places Commission will host “Saving Face,” a walking tour of the “101 Faces” installation along Left Hand Greenway. The tour will be led by the artist, Jerry Boyle, who will help participants locate and identify all the faces in this 2005 art project.
The “Saving Face” walking art tour will reveal every face in this hidden gem of a public art installation and provide insight into each of the characters represented before it is permanently re-sited later this year.
Since the original installation, thousands of people have discovered many of the hidden faces that line the greenway – in the trees, in the water and among the rocks, as well as peering down from bridges along the half-mile route. But only the artist knows where each face is hiding as they surprise us on our journey. Boyle discuss the hows and whys of siting public artwork to surprise the viewer, maintain interest and invite repeat visits.
The event will begin at the Kanemoto Park parking lot on S. Pratt Parkway at Missouri Avenue. The walking tour will leave at 6:45 pm and will return by 8.
This public art installation soon will be de-installed as the City of Longmont prepares for a flood mitigation project along the St. Vrain Greenway. The Faces will be re-installed once the greenway project is completed; however, it will have a different appearance, given that many of the mature trees that currently host faces will be removed.
The public is invited on this free walking tour. Refreshments will be provided, and flashlights are encouraged. For more information or to reserve your spot, please contact Lauren Greenfield, Art in Public Places Administrator, at 303-651-8924 or Lauren.greenfield@ci.longmont.co.us
