Summer 2012, Longmont's Reading, "Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America."
Please join us as we present author Helen Thorpe's riveting account of four senior girls at Roosevelt High School in Denver. Thorpe follows their lives through the struggles they face as citizens as non-citizens trying to get access to a college education in America. This book raises many questions about immigration policies that are still evolving. Lively discussions to be sure!
Look for a book display on the second floor of the library, Friday, June 1.

June 14, 2012 Woody Guthrie Night
2012 is Woody Guthrie's Centennial Year. Hear his life story the way it should be heard - In his songs!
Dan Blegen is - HARD TRAVELIN' : WOODY GUTHRIE's LIFE and SONGS
Woody Guthrie was a balladeer of the 1930's and 1940's who roamed the country - sometimes in an empty boxcar - connecting with America and its people. What is now his signature song, This Land Is Your Land, emerged as a rallying cry in the 1960's when Peter, Paul & Mary reintroduced it to the world.
2012 is a great time to remember this humble "Everyman" from our cultural history. In Hard Travelin' I present Woody's life and times in his own words and in his songs about the Dust Bowl, the natural wonders of the West, labor unions, patriotism and the average Joes who built a great country

July 12, 2012 Cultural Icon Night
Fifty years ago Sean Connery starred as the first cinema James Bond in the film adaptation of Ian Fleming's Dr. No. The film received mixed reviews, even the Kremlin chastised the film by saying it was "the personification of capitalist evil."
Over the years, Dr. No has gained more popularity as the first of 23 Bond Films. Come join us for a non-alcoholic martini, "shaken, not stirred" but, of course and popcorn. A Bond trivia contest will be held at the end of the film, the winner receives a replica Dr. No poster.
The film begins at 6:15 and is free and available to the first 100 attendees. The film is suitable for mature audiences.
